As the nonprofit operations arm of the Virginia Innovation Partnership Authority (VIPA), VIPC is the commercialization and seed stage economic development driver in the Commonwealth that leads funding, infrastructure, and policy initiatives to support Virginia’s innovators, entrepreneurs, startups, and market development strategies. VIPC collaborates with local, regional, state, and federal partners to support the expansion and diversification of Virginia’s economy.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Senior Accountant will report directly to VIPC’s Controller and provide senior-level accounting services in support of the overall Accounting Division of the organization.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform monthly & quarterly closing procedures. This includes preparing General Ledger entries, updating lead schedules and tracking workbooks, reconciling bank accounts, trial balance verification, fringe, overhead, G&A, and indirect allocation reconciliations, fund balance reconciliations, and other appropriate schedules as required.
  • Prepare Accounts Receivable invoices monthly, which includes preparing customer invoices and recording invoices on the Dynamics SL AR module.  Preparing customer invoices includes monitoring labor and subcontractor costs and ensuring that invoices are billed according to contractual requirements. Manage and track receipt of payments, including any necessary inquiries with customers. Apply cash receipts in the AR module.
  • Cash management. Daily monitoring of cash transaction activity. Coordination with the Accounts Payable Manager & Investment team for upcoming cash requirements.
  • Produce draft financial statements and analysis for quarterly Board of Directors meetings in a timely and accurate manner. This includes various project accounting and management reports.
  • Prepare draft annual and quarterly reports to the Commonwealth’s General Assembly and Department of Planning and Budget by legislated deadlines.
  • Review Policies & Procedures annually, updating or implementing internal controls as necessary.
  • Provide information requested during the annual audit conducted by the state auditor.  Provide all financial statement information, lead schedules, reconciliations, explanations, and other information requested by the auditors.
  • Work closely with the Information Technology staff in the maintenance and upgrade of the Microsoft Dynamics SL accounting system including MRx Reporter.  This includes identification of problems, troubleshooting, and resolution of issues.
  • Contribute to the continued improvement of accounting systems and procedures that will enhance the quality, timeliness, and availability of financial information. Identify areas that need improvement, develop and implement solutions, and document procedures.
  • Maintain indirect rates in Dynamics SL to be applied to the General Ledger, prepare monthly reconciliations, and resolve discrepancies as they arise. Assist Controller with annual indirect rate proposals required for federally approved indirect cost rates. Manage audits associated with federal awards and annual indirect rate submissions. 
  • Special projects as required.

BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. in Accounting, with a minimum of 4-6 years of experience required as well as experience with government grant and contract administration (preferred).
  • Experience working for a non-profit organization (preferred)
  • Strong financial reporting and auditing experience required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL (preferred)
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite tools including Excel required
  • Strong analytical and communication skills.
